General Orthopaedic FAQs
What does an orthopaedic surgeon treat?
An orthopaedic surgeon diagnoses and treats conditions of the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Dr. Matsuura treats fractures, dislocations, sprains, strains, sports injuries, arthritis, tendon problems, and nerve compression conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
When should I see an orthopaedic specialist?
You should consider seeing an orthopaedic specialist if you have joint pain that lasts more than a few weeks, a suspected fracture or dislocation, swelling or instability after an injury, limited range of motion, or pain that interferes with daily activities or sleep.
Do you accept new patients?
Yes. Dr. Matsuura welcomes new patients. You can request an appointment online or call our office at (808) 969-3331.
Do I need a referral to see Dr. Matsuura?
Referral requirements depend on your insurance plan. Please check with your insurance provider or call our office and we can help you determine what is needed. Providers can also send referrals through our Refer a Patient page.
What are your office hours?

Where is your office located?

Do you offer X-rays in the office?
Yes. We have state-of-the-art digital X-ray equipment in our office that produces high-quality images with less radiation, so most patients can be imaged and evaluated during the same visit.
Do all orthopaedic problems require surgery?
No. Many conditions respond well to non-operative care such as casting, splinting, bracing, injections, and home exercise programs. Dr. Matsuura recommends surgery only when it is the best option for relieving pain and restoring function.
What types of surgery does Dr. Matsuura perform?
Dr. Matsuura performs arthroscopic shoulder and knee surgery, ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, total hip, knee, and shoulder replacement, partial knee replacement, carpal and cubital tunnel release, trigger finger release, bunion surgery, tendon repair, ganglion cyst removal, and trauma and fracture surgery.
Where are surgeries performed?
Dr. Matsuura is affiliated with Hilo Medical Center and Hilo Community Surgical Center, allowing patients to have surgery and recover close to home without traveling off island.
What is the difference between a total and a partial knee replacement?
A total knee replacement resurfaces the entire knee joint, while a partial (unicompartmental) knee replacement replaces only the damaged portion of the knee. Partial replacement may be an option when arthritis is limited to one area of the joint.
Do you treat sports injuries?
Yes. Dr. Matsuura treats sports injuries in athletes of all ages, including sprains, fractures, dislocations, ACL and meniscus tears, rotator cuff injuries, and tennis or baseball elbow.
Do you treat children?
Yes. Our practice cares for children, teens, adults, and seniors, including pediatric fractures, sports injuries, and congenital orthopaedic problems.
