How Knee Arthroscopy Works

Knee arthroscopy uses an arthroscope, a thin instrument with a camera, to view the inside of the knee on a monitor. Dr. Matsuura uses specialized tools inserted through small incisions to trim, repair, or reconstruct damaged tissue. Compared with open surgery, arthroscopy often results in less pain, smaller scars, and a quicker return to daily activities.

ACL Reconstruction

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the main ligaments that stabilizes the knee. ACL tears often happen during sports that involve sudden stops, pivots, or jumps. A torn ACL does not heal on its own, and many active patients choose reconstruction to restore stability. During ACL reconstruction, the torn ligament is replaced with a tissue graft that serves as a new ligament.

Meniscus Surgery

The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage that cushions the knee. Tears can occur from twisting injuries or gradual wear. Symptoms include pain, swelling, catching, locking, or the knee giving way. Depending on the location and type of tear, Dr. Matsuura may repair the meniscus or remove the torn portion.

Arthroscopic Treatment of Knee Arthritis

In select cases, arthroscopy can remove loose bodies or damaged tissue that cause mechanical symptoms. For more advanced arthritis, a partial knee replacement or total knee replacement may provide better long-term relief.

Non-Surgical Options First

Not every knee injury requires surgery. Mild ligament injuries, some meniscus tears, and early arthritis may improve with rest, bracing, joint injections, and targeted exercises. Dr. Matsuura will use a physical exam and in-office X-rays to recommend the most appropriate treatment for your knee.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Most knee arthroscopy is performed on an outpatient basis at Hilo Community Surgical Center or Hilo Medical Center. Recovery varies by procedure. Meniscus trimming may allow a return to normal activities within weeks, while ACL reconstruction typically requires several months of rehabilitation before returning to sports.

Arthroscopic Knee Surgery FAQs

What is arthroscopic knee surgery?

It is a minimally invasive procedure in which a small camera and instruments are inserted through tiny incisions to diagnose and treat problems inside the knee.

Can a torn ACL heal on its own?

No. A completely torn ACL does not heal on its own. Some less active patients manage with bracing and rehabilitation, but many active patients choose ACL reconstruction.

What are the symptoms of a torn meniscus?

Common symptoms include knee pain, swelling, stiffness, catching or locking, and a feeling that the knee may give way.

How long is recovery after ACL reconstruction?

Most patients need several months of structured rehabilitation before returning to sports that involve cutting and pivoting.

Is knee arthroscopy an outpatient procedure?

Yes. Most knee arthroscopy procedures allow patients to go home the same day.

Will I need crutches after knee arthroscopy?

Many patients use crutches for a short time after surgery. The length of time depends on the procedure performed.

Can arthroscopy fix knee arthritis?

Arthroscopy can help with certain mechanical symptoms but does not cure arthritis. Advanced arthritis may be better treated with partial or total knee replacement.
