Meet Dr. Peter A. Matsuura
Dr. Peter Matsuura is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, with more than 30 years of medical experience. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the University of California at Irvine then trained under internationally renowned mentor Dr. Peter Fowler in London, Ontario where he completed his Fellowship training in Orthopedic Sports Medicine and the burgeoning field of arthroscopic surgery. He also taught at the University of California at Irvine Medical Center from 1993 to 1996 before returning to Hilo to set up his private practice.
Dr. Peter Matsuura retired from the Hawaii National Guard, having served thirty years including four deployments as a member of the U.S. Army Surgical Team. Dr. Matsuura treated orthopedic trauma and war wounds during his deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Germany. He was also a former Commander of the Medical Detachment and served as Hawaii’s State Surgeon from 2006 to 2012.
Dr. Matsuura follows in his mother’s footsteps. Ruth Matsuura, MD, a retired and beloved pediatrician, cared for children in the Hilo community for more than three decades after working as a missionary doctor for ten years in India.

Meet Kerry Lau, PAC
Kerry Lau, PAC is Dr. Matsuura’s Certified Physician’s Assistant (PAC). Kerry was born in New York State and raised in New Jersey where she trained at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She moved across the continent and worked in the Wahiawa General Hospital’s Emergency Department on Oahu, before she moved to the Big Island of Hawaii. Dr. Matsuura welcomed Kerri to the practice in 2017 having been trained in orthopedics at the Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute in New Jersey.
