Meet Dr. Peter A. Matsuura
Dr. Peter Matsuura is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, with more than 30 years of medical experience. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the University of California at Irvine then trained under internationally renowned mentor Dr. Peter Fowler in London, Ontario where he completed his Fellowship training in Orthopedic Sports Medicine and the burgeoning field of arthroscopic surgery. He also taught at the University of California at Irvine Medical Center from 1993 to 1996 before returning to Hilo to set up his private practice.
Dr. Peter Matsuura retired from the Hawaii National Guard, having served thirty years including four deployments as a member of the U.S. Army Surgical Team. Dr. Matsuura treated orthopedic trauma and war wounds during his deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Germany. He was also a former Commander of the Medical Detachment and served as Hawaii’s State Surgeon from 2006 to 2012.
Dr. Matsuura follows in his mother’s footsteps. Ruth Matsuura, MD, a retired and beloved pediatrician, cared for children in the Hilo community for more than three decades after working as a missionary doctor for ten years in India.

Dr. Matsuura built his private practice around a belief that East Hawaiʻi patients deserve the same caliber of orthopaedic care found at large institutions on the mainland and on Oʻahu. Through his affiliation with Hilo Medical Center and Hilo Community Surgical Center, patients can schedule consultations and procedures in a timely manner and recover at home, surrounded by family, instead of flying to a neighbor island for treatment.
Dr. Matsuura treats patients of every age, from young athletes with sports injuries to seniors dealing with arthritis or a broken bone after a fall.
